Top 5 Spring Cleaning Tips for the Otherwise Cleaning Hater

1. It’s okay to not want to let go

I think, at least for me, one of the hardest things for when I spring clean is letting go of things. I get very attached to little things like clothes and books. Even if I haven’t worn that shirt in 2 years I like to keep it for “just in case” situations. I know most blogs and things I’ve seen on Pinterest tell you that you need to let go. Well, I’m here to tell you that it’s not always as easy as throwing it in the throwaway or give pile. As long as it’s not taking up so much space that it’s in the way or preventing you from getting something new, it’s okay if you don’t want to let go. I always encourage decluttering but I am realistic. Spring cleaning needs to be realistic for you and if that means keeping things you should probably let go of, that’s okay.

2. Clean everything and I mean everything!

When I say everything I mean all of it. The bed, the windows the wall, everything. I think spring cleaning should be the ultimate refresh. I like to start of spring with everything being as clean as possible. It’s the most lovely feeling. I suggest making sure you have the right tools for cleaning. Do your research and find out what you need to clean your place appropriately. There are plenty of Pinterest posts that talk about their best tips for cleaning and the products they use. I always go on there to get ideas for how to clean up a certain mess. One of my favourite tips is baking powder and vinegar to clean windows, stinks but works like a charm.

3. Focus on one thing at a time

It’s better to take a couple days to clean than to try and do everything in one day. If you are like me and only have one room you are responsible for this tip may not apply to you unless your room is a real disaster. If you have your own place it takes a bit more time to clean. I rather take a few days to do it correctly and not miss anything than do it in a day and half-ass it. Set yourself small goals for each day like doing your dresser and closet or clean the oven and the fridge. It helps keep you from getting frazzled and overwhelmed with what needs to get done. Spring cleaning should be therapeutic and something to make you feel better not pressure you into thinking you aren’t cleaning good enough. Make a list and look at the calendar. Separate the tasks for when you have time to do them. Put quicker and easier tasks on days you know you won’t have as much time. That goes without saying put longer more complicated and time-consuming tasks for days that you can dedicate a big chunk of time too. I’m pretty sure that is self-explanatory.

4. Throw it away

I am very much about living a no waste life. I am trying to work my way to living no waste but as for I still live with my parents I only control what I own. As much as I wish I could donate all the things I don’t want, sometimes things just need to be thrown out. (Make sure to recycle what you can so that it doesn’t go in landfills that poison the earth!!) Unfortunately, not everything can be recycled or composted or given to charity/ second-hand shops.

5. Make piles

I am the most organized when I can see it. For every section that I work on, I make three piles. Keep, give and throw away (refer to the last tip). I try and keep my throw away pile the smallest and maybe more or less equal to the other two. This makes it easier when I got to put the things I’m keeping away. You can make this easier by using boxes or trash bags. I even label them so I never get confused.
